As USA's Collegiate All-Americans depart for their New Zealand tour today, Lucas Roberts of Penn State University (and brother of Media RFC's Jesse Roberts) and Marco Barnard of Kutztown University are the only MARFU representatives on the team.
The Collegiate All-Americans' first match is set for July 20 against Massey University. The competition will continue with a match against Wellington Old Boys on July 23 and the tour will end in a match versus New Zealand Universities on July 30.
Based on the developmental partnership agreement set in motion earlier this year between the New Zealand Rugby Union and the USA, the team will also have an opportunity to work with coaches from the NZRU.
“This will be a tough tour, but our special relationship with New Zealand Rugby will be greatly beneficial for the team by allowing them to work alongside specialist coaches and exposing them to the New Zealand style of rugby,” USA Rugby CEO and President of Rugby Operations Nigel Melville told USARugby.org. “This will be a fantastic experience for the All-Americans, especially with the next Rugby World Cup on the horizon. Some members of this team may actually be playing in the 2011 World Cup and it’s important to increase their exposure to this level of play.”
